Roof Pitch Options

Pitches of less than 2 12 are considered flat roofs even though they may be very slightly angled.

Anything under 3 12 is a low pitch roof. Low pitched roofs also have some definite advantages in certain situations. There are some standing seam metal roofing options available from atas and other manufacturers that can be installed on a roof with pitch of 1 12. This measurement is best done on a bare roof because curled up roofing shingles will impair your measurement.

The picture below shows the pitch of a 7 12 roof slope meaning that for 12 of horizontal measurement roof run the vertical measurement roof rise is 7. This is one of the rare pitches where the numerator is greater than the denominator with a slope as high as 18 12. First of all they require less material and therefore cost less. This pitch might be as low as 1 12.

Think of a classic addams family haunted house with its soaring peaks and you have a picture of a high pitched roof. 4 12 is quite typical. So you would need to pick the right option as most regular standing seam metal roofs will require a roof pitch of 2 12 or even 3 12 at a minimum. Visually this roof appears flat.

Finally a higher pitched roof is more visible something you should consider when deciding between a painted or galvalume roof for more on color choices see the panel options section. Pitches above 9 12 are very highly angled and are designated steep slope roofs. The most commonly used roof pitches fall in a range between 4 12 and 9 12. Roofs on victorian era houses were often sharply angled with a steep pitch.
