While flat soffits work well in some situations in most they result in pork chop eave returns. Incidentally in both designs when wind is blowing towards the walls of the house where there is roof overhang airflow increases inwards at that soffit. Soffits and fascia provide the roof with a finished look.

The soffit is the flat panel that covers the underside of the rafters between the back of the fascia and the outside of the house wall.
